From over 1100 nominations spanning more than 190 countries, the jury of the Falling Walls Science Breakthroughs has selected 30 finalists in each scientific category. Soler López’s research on the onset of Alzheimer’s has been chosen in the Life Sciences category.

At the ESRF, she pioneers a novel approach to unravel the mysteries of neurodegeneration.

Mitochondrial bioenergetics, the intricate process by which mitochondria generate energy, holds a pivotal role in the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. By leveraging advanced synchrotron-based techniques, Soler López explores the structural intricacies of mitochondrial proteins and respiratory complexes at various levels, from atoms to neurons.

Her goal is to elucidate the spatial-temporal dynamics underlying mitochondrial dysfunction in neuropathological conditions.
