"Geodynamic Modelling: Tectonics is a Hologram"

Abstract
Is it the plates that set the interior of the Earth in motion? Is it the mantle that drives the plates? The question can be asked in complex system terms: how to relate tectonics to the mantle convection? To answer this, it helps to think of plate tectonics as a hologram. In a physical hologram, each point contains almost all of the information about the object. Applying this principle, tectonics contains almost all the information about the mantle, and the mantle contains almost all the information about tectonics. They are included in each other. From microscopic properties of rocks (mechanical, thermal, chemical) that remained to be explored in extreme conditions, a dynamic pattern at the scale of the Earth emerges. Since the early 2000s, numerical models have been used to produce simultaneously mantle convection and plate-like tectonics. For the last 10 years, these models have questioned the origin of tectonic movements in a different way. With this approach, some of the founding mysteries of plate tectonics are gradually uncovered.
