From Japan to Grenoble: Welcoming the JASRI team at ESRF

15-10-2025

On 13 and 14 October 2025, the ESRF – The European Synchrotron – had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from the Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute (JASRI), which operates SPring-8, the world’s largest third-generation synchrotron radiation facility.

Since its opening in 1997, SPring-8 has provided access to users from academia, research institutes, government, and industry, both in Japan and internationally.

The visit offered a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences on advancing synchrotron science and reinforcing collaboration between large-scale research infrastructures.

Highlights of the visit included:

• Engaging discussions on facility upgrades, industry success stories, and emerging technologies.
• Guided tours of the ESRF’s state-of-the-art beamlines and laboratories.
• Exploration of potential collaborations and future joint initiatives.

Both JASRI/SPring-8 and the ESRF continue to play a leading role in X-ray science, pushing the boundaries of what can be observed and understood.

The ESRF extends its warmest thanks to the JASRI team for making the long journey from Japan, for their enthusiasm, and for the inspiring exchange shared during the visit.

We look forward to continuing our dialogue and building on this productive collaboration across the global synchrotron community!
