The interplay between electronic, magnetic, and structural properties in FeO

Xiang Li

ESRF-The European Synchrotron (ESRF), France

Abstract

Iron monoxide (FexO) is a key component of the Earth’s lower mantle, influencing deep Earth processes and redox cycles, but it is also of high interest for modern high tech industry (Kupenko et al., 2019; Ovsyannikov et al., 2016; Dobson and Brodholt, 2005, Wei and Mao, 1994). Despite its importance, the interplay between its electronic, magnetic, and structural properties at high pressures and temperatures is poorly understood. I will present our investigation of FexO up to 94 GPa and 1200 K (Li et al., 2024) using Synchrotron Mössbauer Source spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing how its properties evolve and their implications for the Earth’s deep interior.
