EXPLORE ESRF BEAMLINES - BM02/D2AM: : XRD and SAXS-WAXS at a French CRG beamline - Ewen Bellec

Abstract
BM02-D2AM (“Diffusion, diffraction anomale multilongueurs d’onde”) is one of the five French CRG beamlines at the ESRF, dedicated to in situ X-ray scattering experiments. Operating with monochromatic beams in the 5–40 keV range, it has been designed to combine XRD using a Kappa 6-circle diffractometer, simultaneous SAXS-WAXS with the WOS detector, grazing incidence (GI), and anomalous scattering for materials.
Since 2019, the beamline has undergone major upgrades to adapt to the ESRF-EBS source. Through the MAGNIFIX (2020) and DIADEM (2024) projects, new optical components, CdTe and Si Eiger4M detectors, and two hexapods (SOLANO and BORA) have been acquired. On the data processing side, BLISS + EWOKS enables real-time integration for SAXS-WAXS and powder XRD measurements.
The Kappa diffractometer geometry provides sufficient space for complex sample environments, including a cryo-furnace (10–800 K), a high-temperature QMAX furnace (up to 2000 K under vacuum, air, or controlled atmosphere), and user setups such as traction devices, electrochemical cells, etc...
Within the DIADEM project, high-throughput systems have been developed, including a SAXS-WAXS sample changer capable of handling up to 2600 lamella-type samples, 144 capillaries, or 129 cylindrical cells, as well as a collaborative robotic arm compatible with both SAXS-WAXS and XRD measurements.
Finally, the increased beam coherence from the ESRF upgrade now enables XPCS and BCDI to be performed at BM02.
