X-ray source

  • Cryogenic permanent magnet undulator with 16 mm magnetic period (U16 CPMU).

The energy range is currently limited between 10-20 keV, with a minimum gap of 6 mm due to the X-ray optics and detector operation range. Future upgrade works will allow higher energy and photon flux.

 

Focusing optics

There are three sets of focusing optics distributed as follows:

Optics Hutch (OH)

  • Primary slits cut in the white beam.
  • Compound Refractive Lenses (CRLs) for white-beam pre-focusing. They are available in four different configurations from 0 to 3 lenses.
  • Si-111 channel-cut (CC) crystal monochromator used for energy selection.

 

Micro-branch (EH2)

  • Tungsten slits in the horizontal and vertical axes.
  • Be compound refractive lens transfocator with 2D parabolic lenses (50 µm radius in the apex). The CRL elements are packed in a binary arrangement of 4, 8, 16 and 32 lenses, allowing any configuration from 0 to 60 lens elements. The working distance varies with the number of CRL elements from approximately 10 mm to 100 mm. 

 

Nano-branch (EH3)

  • Tungsten slits in the horizontal and vertical axes.
  • Multilayer Laue Lenses (MLLs) in crossed geometry with variable working distance and focusing capabilities. They are available via LTP collaboration with IWS Fraunhofer in Dresden, Germany and Erich Schmidt Institute in Montan University, Leoben, Austria.

Detectors

Photon counting (XRD) detectors:

  • Dectris EigerX 4M (2070 x 2167 pixels, 75 x 75 μm2 pixel size, frame rate: 500 Hz, max frame rate: 750 Hz)
  • Dectris Eiger 500k (PSI, 500k pixels, 75 x 75 μm2 pixel size, frame rate: 6 kHz, max frame rate: 22 kHz in burst mode (2 s) and 6 kHz in continuous mode)

 

Multichannel (XRF) detectors:

  • 2 VortexEM XRF silicon drift detectors, Energy resolution < 133 eV FWHM at Mn-Kα, input rate > 1 Mcps (on permanent loan from Ghent University, L. Vincze)
  • 1 Vortex XS XRF silicon drift detector

 

Other 2-D detectors:

  • High resolution detector for beam and optics characterization (based on PCO-2000 camera(14-bit CCD), 2048 x 2048 pixels, detection: high resolution scintillator, 3 objectives: 5x, 10x and 20x)

Motorized stages

Motorized stages for sample movement include translation in the 3-axes and rotation orthogonal to the beam direction.

Micro-branch:

Stepper motor for scanning

  • Scanning range: 100×25 mm (H×V)
  • Minimum step: 1 µm

 

Nano-branch

Hexapod for sample positioning

  • Motion range: 20×20×12 mm (H×H×V)
  • Minimum step: 200 nm

Hera piezo-stages for scanning

  • Motion range: 250×250×250 µm
  • Minimum step: 15 nm

PIMars piezo-stages for scanning

  • Motion range: 100×100×100 µm
  • Minimum step: 10 nm
