The EPN Campus (ESRF, ILL, EMBL Grenoble, IBS) is a restricted area, requiring site authorisation and the wearing of a badge at all times.

Site entrance authorisation

Site entrance authorisation is requested automatically for registered users on submission of the Session Form (A Form).

Site entrance authorisation can take up to 5 working days so please ensure the Session Form for your experiment is submitted in due time.

Make sure that your site entrance authorisation has been validated by the Safety Group before travelling to the ESRF; this can be checked via the User Portal in tab "Proposals/Experiments", "A Forms/Sessions" >> "View A Form" >> ). This authorisation is mandatory to enter the site.

Badge and ID documents

You will be asked to report in at the site entrance on arrival and you will need to produce a proof of identification.

Only the following valid (i.e. non-expired) ID documents are accepted:

  • passport
  • national ID card
  • residence permit (titre de séjour)
  • driving licence (with photo)

The badge is given at the site entrance provided the site authorisation has been given.

This badge must be presented to the guards at the site entrance every time you enter the site. All ESRF buildings are under controlled access outside normal working hours and you will need your badge to open the doors. The badge is valid for the duration of the experiment. The use of the badge is strictly personal. Badges must be worn visibly at all times on site. At the end of your experiment, before you leave the ESRF, you must return your badge and its holder to the site entrance.

The site entrance badge is also used to access Guesthouse rooms and to pay for meals at the ESRF/ILL common restaurant on site.

  • Users receiving financial support from the ESRF are given a pre-charged badge: the credit corresponds to the number of meals paid by the ESRF during the period of the experiment.
  • Users who do not receive financial support from the ESRF, must charge their badge at the cash desk of the restaurant (in the restaurant entrance hall) before the first meal.
