The experimental hutch of the D2AM beamline is equipped with a 4 m-long granite table installed after the kappa diffractometer. Along the beam direction, this table is mainly used for SAXS experiments where motorized sample stages, specific sample vessels, and detector holders can be set up at any position. The kappa diffractometer can be simultaneously used. In such a configuration, a sample may be mounted on the goniometer and the detector on the SAXS bench leading to long sample–detector distances, essential for high-resolution GISAXS experiments.


Two vessels are available at the D2AM beamline that allows working under primary vacuum. The first one (following figures) contains a motorized stage (5100 x 50 mm2) on which specific sample holder may be mounted to perform SAXS measurements in transmission geometry.

On the translational stage, sample holders with different hole sizes are usually mounted.



The second one (the following figures) is also equipped with a Y-Z translational stage (50 x 50 mm2). Being larger than the first one, it offers the possibility to mount SAXS furnaces to perform in-situ measurements.

Finally, a translational Y-Z translational stage (the following figure) with large strokes (377 x 100 mm2) can be mounted on the SAXS bench. On this stage, a variety of sample holders, for hard or soft matter, may be mounted to perform SAXS/WAXS measurements in air.


On this stage, specific sample holders may be designed for each experiment depending on the sample requirements (capppilaries, holes ...). Some of these holders are equipped with a heating resistor to perform in situ experiments and can heat up to 250 C. Here are some examples:
