Users resident in the European Union

Before coming to the ESRF, you may wish to obtain the following document:

• EHIC (European Health Insurance Card): This card gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in Europe. You can receive medical care on the same terms as residents of France meaning that treatment is either free or heavily discounted based on local rules, and you often avoid paying upfront, or you can claim refunds easily.

Users resident outside the European Union

You are not entitled to a temporary affiliation in France. You should keep all invoices and receipts to give to your own social security and/or private insurance company.           

Precautions in case of pregnancy

It should be feasible to come to the ESRF to carry out an experiment during your pregnancy.

The ESRF guarantees the respect of radiation dose limits for visitors in all accessible areas. Areas with strong magnetic fields are clearly indicated, and should be avoided by pregnant women. Other dangers include the chemical and biological risks linked with your own experiment. Therefore, we advise you to consult your institute’s works doctor for specific advice concerning your experiment. Your works doctor is welcome to contact the ESRF Medical Service for further information.

Pacemakers and protheses

If you wear a pace-maker or any ferromagnetic medical aid (prothesis), please contact the Medical Service before you enter the Experimental Hall. The Medical Service is located opposite the restaurant, and is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 17:00.
