The CRG BM25-SpLine Beamline is a so-called Collaborating Research Group beamline at the ESRF, The European Synchrotron in Grenoble, France. The beamline operation started in July 2005 and is regulated by a contract between the Spanish administration represented by The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MCIU) former State Secretariat for Research, Development and Innovation (Secretaría de Estado de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación -SEIDI) and the ESRF- The European Synchrotron. The Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas-CSIC has been appointed as the beamline management body.

Since the operation started, the main goal of the interdisciplinary and multipurpose Spanish CRG BM25-SpLine beamline has been to satisfy the needs of the use of synchrotron radiation in the region of hard X-rays of the Spanish scientific community, with a broad range of interests crossing very different research areas: physics, chemistry, material science, biology, environmental sciences, and cultural heritage. It has been dedicated to structural and electronic investigations using hard X-ray techniques mostly in materials science, using state-of-art and worldwide unique and exceptional experimental setups. Profiting from the wide emission cone delivered by the D25 ESRF bending magnet, the beamline is split in two Branches (A and B), with independent optics and experimental hutches. Branch A (BM25A) has been dedicated to Hard X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and High-Resolution Powder Diffraction (HRPD) experiments, while Branch B has been intended to Single Crystal Diffraction (SCD), Surface and interface X-Ray Diffraction (SXRD) and Hard X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES).

After 20 years of success and scientific excellence, the ESRF has launched an ambitious upgrade project with the aim of maintaining a high level of competitiveness on synchrotron radiation science and technology. The upgrade includes the development of new state-of-the-art beamlines and the construction and commissioning of a revolutionary storage ring –EBS, Extremely Brilliant Source- with performances multiplied by 100 in terms of brilliance and coherence. This new source of synchrotron radiation will offer unique possibilities for the exploration of matter and for the understanding of life at the macromolecular level. The BM25-SpLine beamline will strongly benefit from the ESRF-EBS as the bending magnet source will be replaced by a 2-pole wiggler with higher performances. The new EBS source will give the unique possibility to perform experiments in ultra-fast timing-scale and with ultra-high energy and lateral resolution. Innovative experimental techniques can be also envisaged ensuring the access to the European community, and in particular to the Spanish researchers, to a unique state-of-the-art infrastructure. However, due to space restrictions inside the new storage ring, the emission cone to be delivered to the CRG beamlines will be limited in the horizontal plane implying the unique existence of single-branch beamlines. Hence, double-branch beamlines, as the present BM25-SpLine, should move one of the two branches to another port. The Spanish government bodies has decided to operate only one of the two Spanish CRG BM25 branches after the Upgrade Phase-II shutdown. Based on that, we sadly learnt on January 2017 that the Spanish government bodies decided to transfer Branch A of the actual BM25-SpLine beamline to ALBA and keep Branch B at the BM25 port (actual port) of the ESRF.

Concerning BM25B, in accordance with the Spanish government bodies, the goals of the beamline development and upgrade program is to preserve and take advantage of the exceptional characteristics of the new EBS-ESRF source. In a short-term period, the refurbishment program for SpLine BM25B is to adapt the existing infrastructure to the new source and improve the actual technical capabilities to users. In a large-term period, the SpLine-BM25B refurbishment program will be oriented, depending on the financial, technical and administrative support, to the implementation of unprecedented research tools. In this respect, it is of crucial importance to develop state-of-the art experimental techniques at BM25B that will contribute to a full understanding of the properties of a broad range of complex static and dynamic systems, paving the way to further technological advancements.

The 10th December 2018 last X-ray photons entered on Branch A and B from BM25-SpLine giving rise to a shutdown period of 20 months for the EBS installation and commissioning. A new era is starting in which revolutionary and challenging experiments are foreseen profiting from the new ESRF-EBS source. 

At SpLine we wish to share this particular moment bringing together in a special meeting, the SpLine user’ community, the actual and former beamline staff as well as the Spanish scientific and technological policy bodies (MCIU and CSIC). The aim of the meeting is twofold, on the one hand, to commemorate the BM25A farewell and on the other hand, to perform a BM25B brainstorm to define together the new beamline roadmap for the next years.

The meeting is organized in two days; the first day will be dedicated to the BM25B brainstorm. Several contributions will be presented by invited speakers and the users with the aim of providing an overview of present activities, identifying emerging applications, and finding out future trends. A round-table will take place between beamline staff and users concerning the technical requirements, wishes and possibilities offered by the extremely performant EBS source to ensure that the BM25-SpLine beamline maintains the high level of competitiveness and its scientific primacy in the key research disciplines that the beamline supports. The second day will be dedicated to the BM25A farewell in which special contributions will be presented by the users, including a contribution from the  best BM25A PhD thesis with data taken at the beamline, warm contributions from former SpLine staff members, and much more. A cocktail (apéritif dinatoire) will be offered at the end of the meeting.
