Today, after more than three years of successful operation, the ESRF–EBS is a research

powerhouse, producing impressive scientific results and attracting intense interest from

the scientific community. Over 1,070 scientific proposals have been received for the

2023-II submission period, and the first results using the EBS continue to be published,

advancing knowledge in important domains that address the global challenges facing

our society.

Many examples attest to the ESRF–EBS’s scientific excellence, including the

awarding of a new ERC grant to an ESRF scientist for a project to exploit the

X-ray diffraction microscope currently being commissioned on ID03 (p12), and

the progress made on the Human Organ Atlas programme, which provides a new

standard in the clinical analysis of human organs, with unprecedented medical

insights and new potential therapeutic applications. This issue of the ESRFnews will

give you an illustration of some of the myriad new scientific opportunities offered by

the EBS.

In this context, ESRF management and staff have continued in their effort to

optimise the operation of the EBS and the beamline portfolio, taking into account

the resources available, the complex geopolitical context and its impact in Europe,

and the new fourth-generation sources to follow the EBS – such as the SLS at PSI

in Switzerland and the APS at Argonne National Lab, US. Our constant goal is to

bring X-ray science into new research domains and applications for the benefit of a

sustainable society.

I would also like to take advantage of this editorial to thank Helmut Dosch, on

behalf of all of us at the ESRF, for his time and energy as chair of the ESRF Council

and for all the actions he has undertaken to support and aid ESRF activities during

the very complex period through which we are living. Thank you, Helmut! Let me

also take this opportunity to welcome Elias Vlieg, who will helm the ESRF Council

as Chair from 1 January 2024 – from all of us at the ESRF, welcome!
