The ESRF’s Extremely Brilliant Source (ESRF-EBS), a
revolutionary new high-energy synchrotron opened to the
international user community in August 2020 following
a major upgrade, has proven to be a game-changer for
science. Its outstanding capabilities empower researchers
to explore the mechanisms of life and materials with a
level of detail that was previously out of reach, helping to
address some of society’s most urgent challenges.
Scientific results are already delivering on the promise of
ESRF-EBS, opening new frontiers for knowledge. From
pioneering new techniques that can image human organs
in 3D or map the brain’s neural circuits, to accelerating the
design of sustainable energy materials, probing planetary
interiors, understanding how toxic elements behave in soil
and plants, and revealing the secrets of fossils and historical
masterpieces, ESRF-EBS is driving breakthroughs across a
wide range of fields.
With record demand from the scientific community, growing
numbers of high-impact publications, and 12 prestigious
European Research Council (ERC)-funded projects, ESRF-
EBS is recognised as a flagship for cuttingedge research
worldwide Beyond partner country contributions it has
also attracted significant international funding supporting
research programmes rooted in scientific excellence
strategic innovation and societal impact
ESRFEBS has transformed European science and this
is only the beginning through continuous innovation
in hardware and software ESRFEBS will fully unleash
its potential paving the way for the next generation of
synchrotrons and shaping the discoveries of the future
