Pharmaceutical research

  • qualitative and quantitative analysis, such as polymorphism in urate oxidase or structure solution of a metastable benzamide
  • samples in powder form (capillary geometry) or as whole formulated tablets (transmission or reflection if a surface coating is of interest)

► read more about structural studies using high-resolution powder diffraction

Chemical and metallurgical research

  • in-situ studies of catalysts, such as a cobalt based catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis
  • residual-strain in new alloys (e.g. comparing results with finite element analysis predictions).

► read more about in-situ or residual-strain studies on ID22

The samples are mounted by the beamline staff, checked for radiation damage, translated as required, etc.. The data is then normalised, summed and sent back for analysis at the user's convenience. Occasionally, limited data analysis is carried out and a report sent to the client.

Industrial users are also welcome to come and participate in their proprietary experiments, in which case they are not charged for "scientific assistance" and receive the same user support via a local contact as any other experiment.

► Visit the ESRF industry solutions webpages for general information; there you will find a section on powder diffraction techniques and the powder diffraction brochure.
