AIM & SCOPE

Given the detrimental environmental, social and political effects of our current fossil fuel based economies, the world is heading towards a transition to more sustainable solutions. The new energy schemes developed to power societies rely on the development of new functional energy conversion and storage materials, assembled in new types of devices. These are often based on electrochemical principles, and have to be optimised for various different chemistries and applications to meet the end needs. Due to the complexity of such materials and devices, extensive characterization spanning several orders of magnitude in length and time scale is needed to fully unlock the possibilities of these new technologies. Advanced X-ray sources provide excellent opportunities in this respect and allow the study of these materials and devices during operation and in their native environment.

This minisymposium is dedicated to share the latest progress in synchrotron based in-situ/operando characterization of electrochemical materials (electrodes, electrolytes, electrocatalysts, photocatalysts) and devices (batteries, fuel cells, electrolyzers, solar cells, photoelectrocatalytic cells) from both fundamental and applied perspective.
