Partial coherence: a phenomenon of statistical optics - Some questions, some answers and more questions...
This seminar talk is supposed to give an introduction to concepts of statistical optics and why statistical optics describes the radiation produced in synchrotrons. The talk takes a theoretical viewpoint based on the theory developed by Mandel and Wolf. This rigorous theory is often difficult to translate into the language used by experimentalist and it may be troubled by problems that are absent in the emission of synchrotrons.
However, in this talk equations are avoided to the best degree possible and focus is given to the underlying conceptual ideas. The talk explains the numerical challenges arising from the simulation of coherence properties. A result of my PhD thesis is a numerical approach to calculate the coherence properties of undulator emission in synchrotrons, called comsyl (Coherent modes for synchrotron light). It is based on the theoretical ideas developed by Kwan-Je Kim and Gianluca Geloni. Comsyl as well as some of its applications are presented.
