Motivation of the symposium

This Symposium is jointly organised by the ESRF and the ILL to honour the scientist and our friend Paolo Carra - the Head of the ESRF Theory Group in the Joint ESRF-ILL Theory Group - who passed away on the 18th of October 2005. This Symposium aims to highlight the solid state physics field of "Magnetism in solids". This field is very active today due to the importance of both its fundamental aspects and its potential for applications. The Symposium will include presentations both from the theoretical and experimental sides, addressing some of the physics concepts of relevance to the magnetism in solids. The presentations will put into perspective the evolution of these scientific concepts with the challenges for the future in this research area, and will try to give a special emphasis to the important contributions derived from the work of Paolo Carra.
